The EASIEST Superhero VFX You Can Create
Learn how to recreate Homelander's laser eyes from the Series 'The Boys' in this After Effects Tutorial video.
Creating Laser eyes
In the world of "The Boys," Homelander possesses the formidable power of laser eyes. Ever wondered how you could recreate this epic effect? Well, look no further than After Effects and the free Saber plugin from Video Copilot. With some masking and tracking tricks, even beginners can achieve realistic laser eyes!
To start shoot a close-up of the character's face with eyes open. Add extra light on set to mimic the laser glow, making the post-production process smoother. In After Effects, add dynamic flares to the character's eyes by tracking them with the motion tracker. Link the flare center to a null object for easy animation. You can use the Flare plugin from Red Giant for more customization.

For the laser effect, create custom pupils using shape layers and track them to the character's pupils using Mocha AE. Add a glow effect to the pupils and adjust the blending mode to screen for a captivating look.
Finally, for the lasers, apply the Saber plugin to a solid layer and set the blending mode to screen or add. Link the core start property to the null object's eye-tracking data and animate the core end property to make the lasers shoot off-frame. Adjust the core size to control the laser's appearance.
With these simple steps, you can unleash your inner Homelander and create spectacular laser eyes in After Effects. Whether you want to be a hero or a villain, this workflow opens up a world of creative possibilities. So, grab your superpowers and start making movie magic!
