Bundle buyersThe Film School Bundle is four online courses by Jordy Vandeput, the Belgian filmmaker behind the Cinecom YouTube channel, that teach you to shoot video the way a trained filmmaker does, and to earn a living with it. You learn to run your camera in manual mode and frame every shot with a reason, light a scene so it has depth, compose cinematic shots, and set up the business side: your services, your prices, a contract and your first clients.
Jordy spent three years in film school. He studied lighting the whole time and got good grades on the theory exams, yet still had no idea what to do with a light on a real shoot. When he graduated he started freelancing straight away and had to work out the business side on his own, because film school had not taught it. The lighting course and the career course are the explanations he did not get.
31 lessons, about 2 hours, for beginners. Jordy built this course the way film schools teach: first the camera settings (aperture, ISO, shutter speed, frame rates, the histogram, focus, white balance and picture profiles), then framing and visual storytelling (the rule of thirds, framing a person, focal length, camera height, the 180 degree rule, B-roll and shooting for the edit), and finally the gear that supports the camera (ND filters, tripods, rigs, gimbals and sliders).
6 lessons, under 30 minutes, for beginners. Where to put a light and why. You learn the key light, fill light, backlight and practical lights, how a highlight pushes a shadow forward to create depth, and how warm and cool light separate your subject from the background. In the last lesson Jordy lights an interview and a dramatic fiction scene in his own living room.
13 lessons, about 40 minutes, listed as advanced. How to frame a shot so the viewer looks where you want: the rule of thirds, the golden ratio, center composition, depth of field, color and exposure, camera height and focal length, leading lines, the point of interest from one cut to the next, and movement inside the frame and of the camera. Jordy kept every lesson short so you can rewatch it while you practice.
11 lessons, about 55 minutes, for beginners. The business side of video: choosing between freelancing and your own production company, packaging and pricing your services, a simple contract (extra hours, revisions, an upfront payment and usage rights), finding clients through networking, a portfolio or an internship, and growing from your first client with reviews, references and introductions.
Shoot in manual mode and check your exposure on the histogram instead of trusting the camera screen.
Break a scene into shots that cut together without jump cuts.
Light an interview or a short film scene in an ordinary room, starting from the window and lamps that are already there.
Frame a shot with the rule of thirds, the golden ratio or a center composition, and lead the eye with lines, color and focus.
Set your day rate, offer clear packages and know what belongs in a contract.
Beginners who want to become filmmakers, and self-taught video makers who want the foundations behind their shots. It fits anyone who films interviews, short films, documentaries, events or corporate videos, as a freelancer or with a production company. The filmmaking, lighting and career courses start from zero. The composition course assumes you can already handle a camera, which the filmmaking course teaches you first.
A camera on which you can set the exposure yourself. Jordy demonstrates on a Panasonic Lumix GH5, but he says it does not matter which camera you use, and he suggests your phone for the composition exercises. No professional lights are required: the lighting principles are shown with windows and lamps as well as film lights. None of the four courses uses editing software.
Start with Learn Filmmaking From Beginner To PRO. Its lesson on creating depth introduces cinematography and recommends Jordy's composition course as the next step. Then take the lighting course and Mastering Cinematic Compositions. Watch Start Your Professional Video Making Career whenever you are ready to take on clients: it does not depend on the other three.
